140th Canton Fair Opens as China's Commercial Vehicle Exports Hit Record Pace: What Global Buyers Should Know

The 140th Canton Fair opened in Guangzhou on October 15, 2026, welcoming buyers from more than 200 countries and regions to the world's largest trade show. This year's event covers roughly 1.55 million square meters across three phases, with the first phase (October 15–19) focused on advanced manufacturing — including vehicles, auto parts and new energy vehicles and smart mobility. The fair's theme this year, "innovation, green, and intelligence," reflects the direction of China's manufacturing upgrade.

The fair opens at a moment when China's commercial vehicle industry is exporting at a record pace. According to data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers and industry statistics, commercial vehicle exports reached approximately 905,000 units in the first eight months of 2026, up 38.1% year over year, with trucks the dominant category. Chinese heavy truck exports are on track to reach about 400,000 units in 2026, up 17%, spanning more than 140 markets across Southeast Asia, Latin America, Africa and beyond. Semi-trailer exports rose 47.7% in the first half of 2026 to about 66,000 units, with East and West Africa among the fastest-growing destinations. New energy commercial vehicles are accelerating even faster: exports jumped 86.8% to about 83,000 units in the first eight months.

Three forces are driving the boom. First, Chinese manufacturers offer a complete supply chain — from chassis and bodies to specialized equipment — at cost levels that remain competitive globally. Second, product quality and customization capability have improved steadily, allowing factories to build to foreign specifications rather than only standard models. Third, buyers from emerging and developed markets alike are diversifying their sourcing to reduce supply-chain risk, and China's export capacity provides a reliable alternative.

For global buyers, the practical takeaway is straightforward. The Canton Fair is the traditional starting point for supplier sourcing, but attendance is not required to access Chinese factories. Most established manufacturers now work directly with international buyers through online channels, remote specification discussions and factory visits, offering the same products and customization in a shorter procurement cycle. The current export pace also means production slots fill quickly, so buyers planning 2027 fleet or equipment purchases are well advised to start specification discussions earlier rather than later.
