The world's leading commercial vehicle show, IAA Transportation 2026, closed this weekend in Hannover, Germany, after a week that set the agenda for the global truck, trailer and truck body industry. Held from September 14 to 20 under the theme "We Deliver," the show gathered around 1,700 exhibitors from more than 70 countries and delivered over 150 world premieres. Notably, Chinese exhibitors formed the largest national delegation — a clear sign of the growing weight of China's commercial vehicle supply chain on the world stage.
For buyers of trailers and truck bodies, three trends from Hannover deserve special attention.
· Schmitz Cargobull presented sustainable trailer ranges built around honeycomb side wall technology, cutting significant weight versus conventional plywood construction.
· Humbaur unveiled an optimized plastic honeycomb floor achieving a 50% weight reduction in the floor structure.
Fliegl showcased its ultralight SDS 390 Road Runner coil trailer under the banner "Lightweight construction redefined."
· Kögel highlighted tipper bodies built on high-strength fine-grain steel with optimal curb weight-to-payload ratios.
The logic is simple: every kilogram saved in the body is a kilogram of payload gained or a kilometer of extra range for electric trucks. Honeycomb composite panels — with aluminum, PET or polypropylene cores — are replacing traditional plywood and steel sandwich structures across dry van bodies, offering high stiffness, excellent flatness and superior moisture resistance.
Electrification and hydrogen dominated the truck side of the show. Daimler Truck announced a small-series production of 100 fuel cell semi-trucks by the end of 2026. Chinese manufacturers were equally prominent: Sinotruk presented its new energy trucks including a 4×2 pure electric tractor, while Dongfeng globally premiered a 400 kW fuel cell system and showcased its modular new energy platform.
For trailer and truck body buyers, the new energy shift has a direct consequence: as batteries add weight to the tractor, every kilogram of body weight saved becomes even more valuable. Lighter bodies directly extend driving range and protect payload capacity — a decisive advantage for electric fleets.
Software-defined vehicles, artificial intelligence and autonomous driving were core themes of IAA 2026, and the trend is moving beyond the cab. Trailers and bodies are becoming connected assets: telematics track location, cargo condition, equipment health and utilization in real time, helping fleet owners cut costs and improve efficiency. Smart bodies with integrated sensors and communication systems are expected to become standard in the coming years.
With the largest national delegation at the show, Chinese manufacturers demonstrated that the country's commercial vehicle industry has moved beyond exporting complete vehicles. Sinotruk, Dongfeng and FAW Jiefang presented complete new energy product matrices, core components and energy solutions.
