The truck and trailer industry is entering a lightweight era in 2026. China's new mandatory national standard GB 1589-2026 (Automotive, Trailers and Vehicle Combinations - Dimensions, Axle Loads and Mass Limits), approved by the State Administration for Market Regulation in August 2026 and effective from July 1, 2027, extends the maximum length of streamlined low-drag articulated combinations from 17.1m to 18.1m. At the same time, new energy heavy trucks are expanding at record speed in China's domestic market. The demand for lightweight truck body and lightweight trailer solutions has become the strongest market trend of the year.
In China's domestic market, new energy heavy truck sales reached 166,500 units in the first seven months of 2026, up 74% year on year, according to statistics from First Commercial Vehicle Network. In July 2026 alone, 26,500 new energy heavy trucks were sold, up 59.3% year on year. In June 2026, eleven Chinese government ministries jointly issued the Implementation Plan for Promoting the Large-Scale Application of New Energy Heavy Trucks, setting targets of 40% penetration for new energy heavy trucks and total stock exceeding 1.6 million units by 2030. Because battery weight reduces cargo capacity, lightweight truck body design directly increases payload and driving range.
The lightweighting trend is global. At IAA Transportation 2026 in Hannover, Germany, leading trailer manufacturers presented lightweight construction as the core theme, with polypropylene honeycomb sidewalls reducing trailer body weight by up to 350kg compared with plywood structures. Market research shows about 58% of newly manufactured semi-trailers now use lightweight steel or aluminium components. The global semi-trailer market is projected to grow from USD 33.12 billion in 2026 at a compound annual rate of 6.73% toward 2031.
Honeycomb composite panels have become the preferred solution for lightweight truck body manufacturing. Thermoplastic honeycomb sandwich panels replace traditional steel plates, aluminium sheets and wooden boards with a light, rigid and weather-resistant structure. According to industry practice, a 4.2m truck body built with honeycomb panels can reduce total body weight by 300 to 400kg, increasing effective payload by 15% to 20% while cutting fuel consumption and maintenance cost.
WholeChainTech, a professional truck body and trailer manufacturer in Chongqing, China, independently develops and produces the Nylon Honeycomb Dry Truck Body. The Nylon Honeycomb Dry Truck Body uses a 25mm nylon honeycomb panel with a standard areal weight of only 4.42kg per square meter, and supports core densities of 60kg/m³, 80kg/m³ and 100kg/m³ to balance lightweight, rigidity and impact resistance. The nylon honeycomb panel adopts an integrated hot-press molding process with regular honeycomb porous structure, delivering uniform stress dispersion, long-term structural stability and all-weather weather resistance.
For larger cargo vehicles, WholeChainTech also supplies the Honeycomb Core Dry Truck Body, a lightweight truck body solution replacing traditional corrugated steel walls with a high-performance sandwich composite structure of skin sheet and honeycomb core. The Honeycomb Core Dry Truck Body offers superior strength, thermal insulation and durability for general cargo transport, and suits city distribution, long-haul logistics and new energy vehicle platforms. WholeChainTech supports custom sizes and mass OEM programs for fleets and vehicle manufacturers.
Beyond truck bodies, the WholeChainTech product line includes corrugated dry truck bodies, flatbed trailers, lift trailers and motorcycle trailers, all designed with the same lightweight and cost-effective philosophy. As the new energy truck and trailer industry accelerates, lightweight truck body and trailer products will continue to grow in global demand. WholeChainTech remains committed to delivering reliable, safe and cost-effective vehicle systems for domestic and global customers.
